NAMI Missouri’s 31st Annual Conference, Be The Change – Break The Silence, was held May 5-6, 2017 in Columbia, MO.
Keynote Presentation – Deena Baxter, a published author and wellness advocate presented “SURVIVING SUICIDE – Mending the Family Tree with Heartache, Art and Humor.” In 2014, Deena launched The Surviving Suicide & Sudden Loss Project in partnership with NAMI of Collier County, FL. The project includes both a book and creative arts website with a mission to promote life-affirming mental wellness. The book, titled SURVIVING SUICIDE – Searching for “Normal” with Heartache and Humor, received the Mascot Books 2014 Outstanding Author Award for Non-Fiction.
Presenters – The 2017 conference featured an outstanding selection of speakers: Child psychiatrist Christina Gesmundo, MD FABPN discussing bipolar disorder; Dr. Hemant Thakur presenting on Veterans & PTSD; Ronda Reitz, PhD, Missouri’s leading expert on dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT); Christy Hutton, PhD, discussing recovery; Austin Campbell, Pharm D, provided the latest information on medication and research; and Todd Williams presenting on working with youth.
